Every so often, Old Man Winter throws an icy punch at the City of McKeesport. Such was the case on Wednesday afternoon, March 4th, 2015, when the McKee's Point Marina was heavily damaged by an ice jam on the Youghiogheny River.

THE CHAOS BEGINS
As the month of February neared an end, it appeared as if a long stretch of frigid temperatures that had lingered across Western Pennsylvania was about to do the same.  A subtle sign of relief could be felt as the temperature climbed to just above the forty degree mark.  Precipitation in the weather forecast was now falling in the form of rain.  Pleasant thoughts of an early Spring.

By Wednesday, March 4th, ice that had formed on the Youghiogheny River was beginning to melt and break apart.  A steady all day rainfall was also contributing to the potential problem.  Suddenly around 4 pm, jagged slabs of ice in every size began to make their way downstream toward the Monongahela River.  The powerful current created a menacing sight.  Within minutes, the darker side of Nature began to carry out an assault on the docks and marinas that lined the river's edge.
